London Plane

Anyone who's looked up on London pavements has probably seen the beautiful mottled bark of the London Planes.

The Meadows has three so far, all new arrivals: one on the Lonsdale Terrace section of North Meadow Walk, one within a group of new trees at the south end of Middle Meadow Walk, and one on South Meadow Walk.

They're of particular interest in winter because of their strange seed balls

then in summer and autumn because of the distinctive leaves.

At present the park's planes are small, but eventually they'll be as giant and graceful as their southern relatives.
